Steel Restraint Specifications: What to Check Before Buying
A useful steel restraint specification separates internal dimensions, shape, product weight, closure type and included parts. A photograph or a label such as “heavy steel” does not answer all five questions. Record the fields separately when comparing metal cuffs, collars or connected sets so that you are comparing the same kind of measurement.
Start with dimensions, including what was measured
“Diameter” is incomplete if the listing does not say whether it is measured inside or outside the metal. Internal dimensions describe the opening. External dimensions include the material around it. For a non-circular opening, ask for its internal width and depth rather than treating a single diameter as a complete description.
Record the units beside every value. A measurement written as 60 is ambiguous without millimetres, centimetres or another unit. Do not infer internal dimensions from the scale of a product photo, and do not treat a model’s fit as your own measurement.

Do not compare shipping weight with product weight
A listing may report one cuff, a pair, a connected assembly or the complete parcel. Those figures answer different questions. If one seller lists a pair and another lists a single piece, a direct comparison makes the first product appear heavier even when the pieces are identical.
For an illustrative example, a 1.4 kg parcel containing a pair of cuffs does not establish a 700 g weight per cuff. The parcel also includes packaging and may contain a chain, keys or accessories. Ask for the net product figure and what it includes.
Read the package list alongside the photographs
A gallery can show several variants on the same page. It can also show an assembled system that includes separately sold pieces. Before ordering, write down the exact variant and compare it with the text list of contents. “Set” alone does not tell you whether a collar, connecting chain or opening tool is included.
The same applies to adjustable equipment. A quoted range needs a defined measurement point: total outside length and distance between attachment points are not necessarily the same figure. Ask which measurement the seller uses before comparing two ranges.
Keep material descriptions separate from test evidence
A stated steel grade, surface finish or coating describes a claimed material or finish. It is not, by itself, evidence of a particular test result. If a listing makes a performance claim that matters to your purchase, ask for documentation identifying the tested item and the scope of that result.
Likewise, weight and thickness are not load ratings. Do not infer a working-load limit or suitability for suspension from a heavy appearance. An unspecified rating should remain “not specified” in your comparison sheet, rather than becoming an estimate.

Please confirm the exact variant, internal dimensions and shape, net weight and whether that figure is per piece or per set, closure mechanism, and all included parts. Please also identify any dimensions or ratings that are not available rather than estimating them from the photos.
Save the reply with the product URL and the date. If you change the selected variant, repeat the check: the answer for one size or bundle may not apply to another.
